VEC-MECH goes ubuntu.
Today has been a very happy day for me. Partly because the final review went off well with out any bloopers that i expected would creep in. And more than that , because i could actually convince my lab system admin and actually install ubuntu in a couple of the high end systems that we use for CAD designing.
The MECH on VEC-MECH the (CAD lab gateway systems)
has been as dear to all us mechies as a wife would be to a newly wed husband. And today my love affair just got all the more lovable. the spirit of FOSS/libre soft entered into the world of mechanical engineering. though the admins basically installed it to get rid of the virus problems that has been eternally bothering us..they soon realized that not only can the *nux systems be great licensing servers for the PROPRIETARY cad systems, they can also run some super duper cool FOSS-CAD software systems like Q-cad.
the system admins have also shown enthu to install and run the open cascade kernal. Promising. today i probably will be trying CAElinux. it seems to sound super cool. lets see how good it is.
hoping my coll pioneers in open source CAD amongst the local colls ...:) big hope..reachable though...
