There are certain things which i cannot fathom. Chennai's conservatism is one such thing, which i think even the oldest and wisest will not understand. Where does conservatism begin? and where does it end? Today's conservatism is nothing more than moral policing. Why is it that we scorn at girls who wears western dresses? why is it that we always assume the extreme whenever we see a girl and guy together?
two weeks ago, i was at barista had a great time with my best chums and made merry. we had a girl in the gang.A few of the other costumers had this weird look in their face, everytime they looked at us,but then we did not give a damn. i mean who will give a damn to the society? Today i was at a different place, i saw a few girls and guys chatting away, and i had this immediate notion that they were flurting and wailing whiling away their time. I had this nasty urge to go tell them to shut the trap up, it was at this time that i realized how the others would have felt at barista the other day. why is it that our city's people are such bigtime hypocrites. i mean, my situation is similar to a lot of you i suppose. when it comes to the society against you at some situation, you crib about the society, and when it comes to some other person, you turn out to be the nasty society.
its sad that often it is the woman of the gang, that has to incur all the unwanted wrath. "look at that slut, the way she is flirting with those guys" you say, not realizing that those people in the other table are talking the exact same thing, only they are referring to the girl next to you.
Rapid westernization, modernization, moral highhandedness and traditional sentiments have together joined to form a vicious circle, that has entrapped everyone of our minds. Neither can he go out freely, nor can he stop commenting about others. Fear of the neighbours, fear of the society's ever speculating minds, and above all the fear of one's own self that arises from conflict thinking is doing the citizens no good at all.
Conservatism is good, a liberal society is better, but what about a society that is neither conservative, nor liberal, but is run by a few watch dogs, and run based on a moral that is next to insanity? why is it that the best minds in the country take to such a perverted way of life? why is it that we constantly fear anything and everything around us? why is it that we don't find the same social security that we at least hope, exists in other cities? Well, its not because that we chennai people are a rowdy lot, its because, we do not do anything other than calling people names and being hypocrite about things that you yourself are sure should never exist in earth.
Until such a day comes i will never call myself a proud chennaiaite, not that i am ashamed of my city, but then, i expect something better than this from people who are personally very good, but collectively nothing more than garden crickets that constantly keep shouting, without any reason.
